The Release Conference of Chilean Nobel Prize Winner Gabriela Mistral’s Anthology Held at GDUFS

On the afternoon of March 16th, the release conference of Tú eres un agua de cien ojos—the first Chineseversion of Chilean Nobel Prize Winner Gabriela Mistral’s anthology—was held in the MBA Education Center, GDUFS. Present at the conference were Carlos J. Marin, the Consul General of the Chilean Consulate General in Guangzhou; JIAO Fangtai, the Vice President of GDUFS; officials from the Ecuador, Peru, Brazil, Cuba Consulatesand the Chilean Embassy, andteachers and students from the Department of Spanish Language. In the conference, Mr. Martin said that the digital world is so overwhelming that some people think books are fading away, and this release conference marks a great effort in bringing back the vitality of books.

Vice President JIAO Fangtai delivered a welcome speech

Firstly, Vice President JIAO Fangtai delivered a welcome speech. After extending his sincere welcome to all delegates, Vice President JIAO stated that since the establishment of diplomatic ties 47 years ago, China and Chile have witnessed satisfactory development in bilateral cultural communications. On account of the long-standing cooperative bond, GDUFS has conducted a close cooperation with Chilen Embassy in China. Also, GDUFS and University of St. Tomás in Chile exchange students every year, and both universities held seminarsin order to study Sino-Chile relations. Vice President JIAO finished his speech by expressing his hope of strengthening the cooperative tiesand promoting cultural understanding.

Consul GeneralCarlos J. Marindelivered a speech

Subsequently, the Consul General Carlos J. Marin delivered a wonderful speech. He warmly greetedall the attendees and said that China is a poetic country, as is Chile. It is poetry that crosses the geographical boundaries and combines China and Chile together. 60 years have passed since the death of Gabriela Mistral, yet the vitality which is embodied in her works still inspire people today. She was the first and ofnow the only female Latin American writer who had won the Nobel Prize in literature. She took the love for her homeland and made it into art, which makes her work the perfect choice for Chinese readers to feel and taste the cultureof Chile and Latin America.

The cultural attaché of the Chilean embassy in ChinaEdmundo Bustosdelivered a speech

Edmundo Bustos, the cultural attaché of the Chilean embassy in China, briefly introduced the book afterwards. According to him, this anthology collected 149 sections of poems from five different books. Apart from these, it also included 12 prose poems, the speech delivering in the Nobel Prize Award ceremony, a brief introduction of her whole life and her works. Thenhe expressed his gratitude to a policy which aims at popularizing some Chilean authors who have made great achievements. He also emphasized the importance of literary and culture exchange in the Sino-Chile relationship and hoped that we could strengthen the culture exchange in the future.

At the end of the conference, Mr. Carlos J. Marinand Mr. Edmundo Bustos donated Tú eres un agua de cien ojosto GDUFS. The other attendees were Edmundo Bustos, the cultural attaché of the Chilean embassy in China; Isabel Perez Suarez, the Consul General of the Cuban Consulate General in Guangzhou; Julio Miranda Iglesias, the Consul Generalof the Cuban Consulate General in Guangzhou; Mariella Milina, the Consul General of the Ecuador Consulate General in Guangzhou; David Gamarra, the Consul General of the Peruvian Consulate General; Jose Vicente da Silva Lessa, the Consul General of the Brazilian Consulate General in Guangzhou, and Fran Guzmán, the President of ESPANA.
