World Cuisine Corridor of World Culture Festival
2015-10-30 10:29

On October 29th, 2015, World Cuisine Corridor managed to embrace a delicious world of eating experiences on the north campus, attracting many people of different colors. As a part of World Culture Festival, World Cuisine Corridor aimed to broaden students’ horizons and promote the culture communication. 32 stalls, including 25 countries, could be found on the campus street.

The opening ceremony

Following the music to the World Cuisine Corridor from a distance, some students couldn’t help tasting the food and dancing to the music. Wearing local costumes and beautiful make-up, foreign students and their friends were busily selling their snacks: potato flapjacks from White Russia, steamed stuffed buns from Mongolia, croissants from France… Not only did the taste catch people’s attention, but also the packaging. Beverages such as “blood bag” from Thailand reminded people of horrific vampires in time for Halloween.

Students dancing

The muggy weather didn’t weaken students’ passion for the World Cuisine Corridor. Besides making food, foreign students sang and danced in the crowd, continuously inviting Chinese students to join them. Battle dancing by Uzbekistan could be the climax of the afternoon. Ethiopians dancing and singing at the same time was another attraction.

Happy moment

"Delicious food and beauties" was most Chinese students’ description of the World Cuisine Corridor. They tasted the food, collected stamps for their collection maps and enjoyed the communication with different people. Foreign students raising paperboards written “free hug” on received lots of hugs from the girls. The Spanish stall also offered kisses and hugs to customers through playing games.

From the stalls, we could see that these foreign students were well-prepared for this activity. Yusef, an Ethiopian, told us about his preparation. The coffee they sold was sent by his friend from Ethiopia three days ago. It was one of the best coffees in his country which he wanted Chinese customers to try. And he felt very happy to join this activity for the third time. When asked about the photos of Chinese president Xi and Ethiopia president Mulatu Teshome hanging on their tent, he was proud to talk about Mulatu’s visit to China two months ago and the fast economic growth in Ethiopia. He hoped both countries would strengthen their relationship in the future.

Happy party

Diana, a French student, also shared us her feelings in fluent Chinese. She and her friends sold out of their crepes and croissants, tired but happy. Dozens of customers lined up before their stall patiently. It was a pity that they didn’t have time to go around. However, Chinese students showed them their passion for French food and culture which left them a great impression.

Another interviewee, Lee, a Korean, said he had fun selling Korean rice cakes. As a freshman, he had never attended such an activity on campus before. He thought it was a great opportunity to practise his Chinese and meet new people.

World Cuisine Corridor finally ended at 5:30p.m. People enjoyed themselves for the whole afternoon. It was a big stage for students to show talents. Food was the focus, but so was cultural communication. Different nations, different colors and different food would never become an obstacle, since we were all GDUFSers.

"Welcome to join us!"
